St. Kitts – Nevis Defence Force Remembers The Past

June 11, 2011 (SKNIS)

A platoon of soldiers from Alpha Company of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force marched through the streets of Basseterre on Friday, as a show of strength for the past, present and future of the twin-island Federation.

The men and women were led on the three-hour route march by their Company Commander Captain Kayode Sutton, who told SKNIS that such events are held regularly at various locations around St. Kitts. However, Captain Sutton emphasized that today’s occasion had a significant meaning.

“Today marks the 44th anniversary of the invasion of St. Kitts which occurred on the 10th of June 1967,” he said, recalling a dark chapter of the past when armed persons attempted to overthrow the elected Government, headed by Premier Honourable Robert Bradshaw. “We have to learn about our history to see where we are and … [move forward] into the future.”

Captain Sutton stressed that the march also served to boost the morale of the soldiers and demonstrated a show of force to persons wishing to engage in antisocial activities.

A route march typically begins at 5:15 a.m. Today’s session started at 8:00 a.m. when most persons were either at work or heading there. The march took the soldiers to some areas classified by the security forces as “hot spots.” Captain Sutton noted the response of the public.

“People say that they loved to see us,” he stressed. “It was a source of inspiration for our men and reassuring for the public that we take their safety and security as paramount. The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force will continue to support the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force in the maintenance of law and order.”

Special Representative of Finland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ambassador Pasi Patokallio discussed matters of cooperation between his country and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) during last week’s 14th Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of the Caribbean Community here in St. Kitts.

“I am here to discuss various matters of cooperation that we have with many Caribbean countries including St. Kitts and Nevis. Our visit is to attend this meeting as it is a perfect opportunity to meet the various Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the Caribbean countries,” Ambassador Patokallio, who is based in Helsinki, told the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM) following the formal opening of the two-day meeting at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

Finland’s Caracas-based Ambassador to CARICOM and the OECS, His Excellency Mikko Pyhala said his European nation has several cooperation agreements in the areas of sustainable energy, education and on governance with all the CARICOM countries and particularly with the OECS countries.

“We are developing a seminar on environmental diplomacy for the OECS countries and we also have quite a lot of bilateral agreements and initiatives with individual CARICOM countries and it’s very useful to be in these kinds of meetings to get new ideas to come to an agreement and to see how the cooperation is going ahead,” Ambassador Pyhala said.

Expressing a pleasure to be in St. Kitts, he said “This is wonderful country. Your country is so beautiful; there is so much to see. It is quite an attraction and we also want to promote tourism from Finland to countries that can receive visitors and have the requisite attractions.”
