Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry met with Dominica’s Minister of Energy, the Hon. Rayburn Blackmoore Saturday to discuss the way forward for geothermal energy on both islands.  The discussions took place at the Premier’s Bath Plain office.

Our Geothermal project will benefit Nevis and St. Kitts and other islands in the region, while Dominica will assist neighboring French islands. With this in mind we have every reason to work together to make sure we have two successful projects in the OECS,” noted Premier Parry.

The Premier told the Energy Minister that Nevis had completed its exploration phase, and was looking forward to the next phase, which is production drilling.

During the meeting, Premier Parry and Minister Blackmoore discussed ways in which the two islands could learn from each other, converse on their experiences, and keep the lines of communication going into the future.

Mr. Parry said it is important that the two islands move forward on this natural resource in order for Dominica, Nevis and other regional islands to be able to provide energy to all its residents at very affordable rates.

Mr. Blackmoore shared the sentiment, and agreed that it was important that the two islands communicate and have transparent discussions on the geothermal matter.

“Geothermal is a cleaner and cheaper way to go and we believe that open dialogue with Nevis can be very helpful on that road to natural energy success,” said Blackmoore, who was visiting the island to learn from the OECS’s renewable energy leader, Nevis.

Minister responsible for Natural Resources and the Environment on Nevis Hon. Carlisle Powell, said Nevis was willing to share its lessons learnt with its geothermal development with neighbouring Windward Island Dominica who was in the process of drilling exploratory wells in the Roseau Valley.

Mr. Powell’s comment came on January 14th in an interview with the Department of Information during a visit from a three member delegation from Dominica led by Minister of Public Works, Energy and Ports Hon. Rayburn Blackmoore on a mission to gain knowledge from Nevis’ geothermal development experience.

“We are both pursuing geothermal explorations and it is important for us to share our own experiences with respect to the geothermal explorations.

“We have completed our explorations in terms of doing our exploratory drilling and we are now ready to move on to the next phase which is production drilling. Dominica is at the exploration stage and so we were quite happy not only to welcome Minister Blackmoore and his delegation but to be able to share experiences in this meeting,” he said.

According to Mr. Powell, as both islands moved forward in varying stages of geothermal development that they would continue to engage in similar exchanges.

He said they were both small island developing states and it made no sense to reinvent the wheel therefore whatever experiences Nevis had it was important to share it with Dominica as both islands forged ahead with the development of their geothermal resources for the needs of their people and the benefit of the entire Organisation of East Caribbean States (OECS).

Prior to Minister Blackmoore’s meeting with Minister Powell he paid a courtesy call on Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry at his Bath Hotel Office at Bath Plain.

The Dominica Minister was accompanied by Principal Advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister Mr. Edward Lambert and Coordinator of the Geothermal Unit in Dominica.

Jason Timothy. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry responsible for Natural Resources and the Environment in the Nevis Island Administration Mr. Ernie was also present.

A project to install solar panels to provide electricity to Government Headquarters has been completed.

Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) His Excellency Miguel Tsao are expected to speak at a ceremony on Friday 23rd December to symbolically unveil the solar-powered syystem which has been installed on the roof of Government Headquarters.

The brief ceremony to take place in the foyer at Government Headquarters starts at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

Dr. Douglas has in the past reiterated his administration’s clear commitment to an energy policy that would see a significant amount of its electricity obtained from renewable energy.

The government had stated its goal and objective and wants to achieve at least 60 percent of its energy generation from the use of renewable energy and we would want to achieve this by the year 2015.
