As part of its ongoing commitment to staff development and training, Nisbet Plantation Beach Club recently participated in a staff exchange with Curtain Bluff resort on Antigua. Both Caribbean beach resorts have been consistently honored among the world’s best hotels, including the recent 2011 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards where Nisbet ranked No. 1 and Curtain Bluff was No. 10.

Two of Nisbet Plantation’s staff members traveled to Antigua and two employees from Curtain Bluff traveled to Nevis for the two-week educational experience. Glendina Liburd, a server at Coconuts for 16 years, and Leonora Didder, Reservations Manager with 23 years of service, from Nisbet Plantation, and Sandra Hazelwood and Eulanda Anthony, housekeepers from Curtain Bluff, participated in this first staff exchange between the two Caribbean hotels.

“This exchange was very positive and productive for all of the participating staff members and our resorts overall,” says Jamie Holmes, General Manager at Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. “Our staff members have returned with fresh ideas, new friendships and greater knowledge of the hotel industry from experiencing first-hand another resort’s operations, which are being shared with the rest of the Nisbet team.”

“Our staff members, and the high quality of personal service they provide, are critical to our success,” Mr. Holmes continues. “Each team member is invaluable and I believe that it is important to invest in their development with programs such as this. We look forward to participating again next year.”

The management and staff members at Nisbet Plantation Beach Club have a lot to smile about and celebrate this week. The Nevis beach resort just earned new accolades from the travel industry’s top publications – Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler.

World’s Best Service

Travel + Leisure recognized Nisbet Plantation’s staff in its 2011 World’s Best Service Awards. Nisbet Plantation ranked #3 in the world with a score of 98.75, just 0.2 points behind the two resorts tied at #1.

With such a high score, Nisbet Plantation became the #1 resort for service in the Caribbean, Bermuda and Bahamas. Nisbet Plantation was one of only five resorts in the Caribbean recognized, and the only hotel from St. Kitts and Nevis featured. Travel + Leisure’s World Best Service Awards are based on the results of the 2010 World’s Best Awards survey.

“Travel and Leisure stated that ‘behind every memorable hotel experience are the staffers who make it happen.’ We whole heartedly agree,” says Jamie Holmes, General Manager at Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. “This award truly honors the ladies and gentleman of Nisbet who make the guest experience so wonderful and who become like family to many guests who return.”

Top Spas In The World

Condé Nast Traveler named The Palms Spa at Nisbet Plantation among the top 250 spas in the world. In its debut on the prestigious spa list, Nisbet Plantation was ranked #4 in the entire Caribbean and Atlantic.

With an overall score of 94.3, Nisbet Plantation was the top-ranked hotel in St. Kitts and Nevis. The Four Seasons Resort Nevis had a score of 91.2 and placed 12th in the Caribbean, and the St. Kitts Marriott Resort was 25th in the Caribbean with a score of 85.1. The Condé Nast Traveler Top Spas list is compiled from data in the 2010 Reader’s Choice Survey.

The Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the Top 250 Spas in the World and the Travel + Leisure’s list of the World’s Best Hotels for Service are featured in each publication’s June 2011 issue, which are on newsstands now.

This brings the total awards that Nisbet Plantation has received in 2011 to six, including being named the #1 resort in the Caribbean and #6 in the world in its debut on the Travel + Leisure 500 list.

Nevis Premier Speaks About The Four Seasons Resort Reopening

Jim Fitz Gibbons - Four Seasons Resort's President

Jim Fitz Gibbons – Four Seasons Resort’s President

Charlestown, Nevis
April 15, 2011

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry told a meeting with Nevisians and friends of Nevis in Tortola that it was very important for the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Nevis Island Administration to make known their role in the re opening of the Four Seasons Resort.  He made the statement in Tortola, at the Marina Inn last week.

“It was very important that we tell people about the steps taken to re open the Four Seasons, because when the Resort closes the economy comes to a screeching halt,” said Mr. Parry.

According to the Premier, the reason why the Administration was adamant about the reopening was that the hotel had experienced financial problems prior to the passing of Hurricane Omar and explained that the owners had failed to meet a number of financial obligations.

The hotel lost its five-diamond rating and was forced to lower its rates. However, the owners felt that the Four Seasons was making a lot of money and were not receiving their fair share.

“An interesting aspect to the matter,” the Premier said, “was that $120 million was borrowed for repairing the resort and only $80 million was accounted for.

“Many difficult financial matters were taking place and the closing of the Resort came under the disguise of damage due to the passing of the Omar storm but it was much more than that.”

The Premier said he knew that the situation with the Four Seasons Resort-Nevis was dire.  He further explained that Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Mr. Laurie Lawrence and Attorney General Hon. Patrice Nisbett held meetings with the owners in an effort to re open the property after the owners had indicated they were not willing to inject not one more dollar into the property but instead were willing to abandon the property.

The Premier added that he was asked indirectly by the owners whether he was interested in another hotel chain managing the hotel.  Mr. Parry said his response was a stern “No, the Four Seasons Resort is of a very high standard and it is one of the leading hotels in the world and I wanted it to remain in Nevis as the Four Seasons brand!”

Some of the financiers decided that they wanted the matter decided by the United States Court system and for this reason the Nevis Island Administration and the Villa owners got involved. However, with the assistance of the Attorney General of St. Kitts-Nevis, Hon. Patrice Nisbett, the government proved its case before a Court in Delaware.

A case was made for Nevis, that the closure of the Four Seasons Resort would have over 600 persons out of work. The United States judge on hearing the matter was sympathetic and decided the property would be reopened.

In conclusion the Premier said “According to the President of Four Seasons Resort World Wide, Mr.Jim Fitz Gibbons, the Government demonstrated good leadership and the foresight to act prudently and their pivotal role led to the Four Seasons Resort being opened.”
