Telephone and other communication operators from the Telecom Unit of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force are now better equipped to respond to the calls of the public as a result of customer service training being held this week at the Police Training Complex.

The three-day training session which runs from Monday, January 30 to Wednesday, February 01, 2012, reinforces Police Commissioner C.G. Walwyn’s commitment to restoring positive communication between the police and the public and raising all aspects of police operations to the highest level of professionalism.

According to training facilitator Mrs Hazel Ross-Robinson, when persons in St. Kitts and Nevis are in distress and call ‘911,’ they hear the voices of the Telecom Unit as their first contact with the police. The establishment therefore wants to make Telecom operators aware of the importance of what they do.

“The Commissioner therefore wants to ensure that those who work in that department are keenly aware of the importance of their services to the nation, and that they respond in a manner that’s professional, and in a manner that avoid the type of crisis that usually result if there is inadequate responses and follow-up” said Mrs Ross-Robinson.

The main objective of the training, explained the facilitator, is to impress upon Telecom workers that the people who reach out to them are usually in distress and need help urgently and efficiently.

“What I’m trying to do is to impress upon the people who work in the Telecom department the fact that when people reach out to them they’re usually in a panic, they’re usually in distress because there’s a fire, there’s a burglary, there is a violent act, and those people are in distress, and they need help,” Mrs Ross-Robinson said.

“They need help quickly, they need help efficiently, and they need professional follow-up. So what I’m trying to do is to impress upon the Telecom operators what an important role they provide to the police force, what an important role they provide to the nation, and to make sure that they consistently and unfailingly rise to the occasion, both because their self respect requires it, and because the nation is counting on them to function in that manner.”

Mrs Ross-Robinson said this is not the first time that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has afforded its communication professionals this type of training, but, as a result of the dynamic evolution of the police force, has found it necessary at this time to repeat this type of training to keep Telecom workers at the top of their “game”.

“Well this training has taken place before, but that was some time ago. People get transferred, people move on to other positions, new people come on staff, and so they need to, as well, be upgraded in terms of their skills.”

Police Officers too have been receiving vast amounts of training as an ongoing process in forensics and other areas of police operations as components of a multifaceted approach to training being undertaken by the police force.

St. Kitts – Nevis Mobile Apps Workshop A Huge Success

Local Talent Shines In Mobile App Development

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
January 30, 2012 (SKNIS)

“All I can say is wow!”

That was the sentiment of Minister of Technology and Youth Empowerment Honourable Glenn Phillip after witnessing the outcome of the January 24 to 27, iCAN Mobile App Development Workshop.

The Minister noted that “when this workshop was envisaged, I knew that we had some talented people here on the island, but to take it to this extent where we have an app for agriculture and one for crime … I am really, really ecstatic.”

Eighty participants completed the sessions which highlighted how to design, develop and promote applications for smart devices that run the Apple, Android and Blackberry platform.

At the end, the group rolled out three applications to be uploaded to the Android Market. I See U – an anonymous crime reporting app, Time to Plant – an advisory application that outlines when to plant and how to care for featured crops, and finally Where to Eat – which highlighted fine cuisine establishments and their local menus.

Facilitator Bevil Wooding of the BrightPath Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago told SKNIS that his group has replicated the programme in several Caribbean territories. However, this was the first time that the participants produced three separate applications at the end of the workshop instead of the usual one. Mr. Wooding stated that he was impressed with the wide range of suggestions covered by the attendees and noted that the iCAN workshop had to be modified to allow for the dynamism and creativity of the local group.

Karanja Hughes, 19, and Asquil Ferlance, 18, were among the dozens of students that attended the sessions at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. Both are enrolled at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) and shared similar opinions about the workshop.

“It was very exciting for me,” Karanja revealed, noting that her expectations were realized. “The one thing that will stay with me is how to layout the applications and how to design them.” She added that she intends to create her own app that deals with locating places in St. Kitts and Nevis as well as creating wallpapers.

Asquil is a junior developer being mentored by his older brother. He “loves” programming and played a vital role in the creation of the crime reporting app. “Being a part of this group was good,” he stated. “I was really touched inside to be a part of such a team and I am excited to see all the work we did.”

The applications are currently not available on the Android Market as some content and functionality issues are to be finalized. Time to Plant and Where to Eat are expected to be launched in the next two weeks. I See U is a bit more complicated and will require discussions with relevant authorities and other parties. It was successfully demoed at the workshop close.

Minister Phillip revealed that he was so pleased with the outcome that he intends to reengage the services of the BrightPath Foundation to conduct a follow up workshop.

Attending church on Sunday at the Wesleyan Holiness Church in Conaree was the beginning of this historic week with Hon. Eugene Hamilton.

Participants from each sector of the constituency were present and with great satisfaction Hamilton also welcomed former Minister Richard Caines who joined in the service for the second year running.

Hon. Eugene Hamilton brought brief greetings, thanking the leadership and congregation of the church for allowing him and his members to worship with them. He noted that the service also had one of the Remarkable Teens of 2011 and he asked for the guidance of the holy-spirit as he carries out the will of his constituents.

On Monday the town-hall meeting at the Cayon Community Center provided an opportunity for constituents to address issues of concern and the Honourable Eugene Hamilton and party Chairman McLure Taylor benefited from some very thoughtful and constructive contributions.

On Tuesday at the Community Center in St. Peters, Hon Eugene Hamilton addressed issues of paramount importance and encouraged and benefitted from the wisdom of the constituents who attended.

On Wednesday residents in Conaree attended the meeting held at the Community Center and again the wisdom of constituents were of much benefit.

In all three community events Hon. Eugene Hamilton addressed important constituency and National issues. He spoke about the SIDF and the racket of the Government acting like a Mafia organization. He spoke about the $11 million dollars that have been paid by the government to pay a so called debt that was not on the books of the State and that was Statute Barred in the Federation.

All events so far have been successful and Mr. Hamilton has therefore set his sights on another term as he took the time to address some electoral matters and answer questions from the floor.
