February 28, 2011

Ms. Phillichar Hobson who represented the Parish of St. Thomas, walked away with the coveted Miss NRP 2011 title on Saturday night, from a field of five contestants who represented all the constituencies on Nevis.  She was coronated by Premier of Nevis and leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP), Hon. Joseph Parry and queen pageant committe member, Idona Browne, much to the delight of hundreds of spectators who had gathered at the Cultural Complex in Charlestown to witness the show.

The show which organizers said exceeded their expectation was made up of five segments –Icebreaker, Ambassadorial Wear, Talent, Evening Wear and Interview.

“The Miss NRP Queen show was a show of creativity and class and Miss Hobson expressed that with her eloquent speaking, stage presence and her unique talent exhibition,” Premier Parry said.

The 1st runner up position went to Miss Hidea Tyson of St. Georges Parish, who was sponsored by Oualie Masonary Products and the 2nd runner up was Miss Oceania Williams of St. Paul’s who was sponsored by Marcel Metal Works. The other contestants who did extremely well and represented their parish with style and grace were Miss Mikahlia Lawrence of St. James Parish sponsored by Sol Products and Miss T-Shari Hull of St. Johns Parish sponsored by Island Tyres.

During the talent segment, Miss Hobson, who was sponsored by Best Deal Construction, captured the crowd with her exhibition of a dramatization which highlighted the achievements of the Nevis Reformation Party.

The show was hosted by Mr. Walter Morton and Mrs. Ali Guilbert, who provided both commentary and comedic relief.  The interview segment was hosted by Walter Morton who made the girls feel relaxed and comfortable to take on the usually difficult task, but each contestant fared well. They answered questions formulated by the Queen Show committee.

The evening wear adorned by the ladies, saw a variety of attractive and creative gowns in varying shades of green (the NRP’s official colour).  Miss Hobson’s gown stood out based on the reactions of the audience once Phillichar entered the stage.

Mrs. Monica Tyson, Pageant Organizer said she was pleased with the quality of the show and she expressed gratitude to all the sponsors, chaperones and committee members who assisted in the production of the event.

Premier Parry Speaking At The NRP Convention

Charlestown, Nevis
February 28, 2011

Premier and Leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP), the Hon. Joseph Parry acknowledged the stalwarts of the Party at its convention held at the Occasions Event Center on Sunday.

“This weekend we celebrate 40 years of the Nevis Reformation Party.  We celebrated with pageantry and in song and as we do, we are compelled to draw the picture of Nevis 40 years ago and Nevis today,” commented the Premier.

The NRP leader asked the audience to reminisce on the parade of great men and women who sacrificed and built Nevis.

The Premier mentioned some of the outstanding persons who helped start the party and gave Nevis the “foundation” it had today.  The names included Mr.Uhral Swanston, Mr. Round Liburd, Mr. Horace Liburd, Mr. Ivor Stevens and Mr. Levi Morton.

According to the Premier, it was important for those who could, to remember the days of poor roads, an irregular water supply, the state of the electricity supply, education, health services and the availability of jobs.  He reminded the audience that it was a time of emigration to England, Canada, America and the Virgin Islands.

“Today, as we examine the change and admire the great network of roads, the present state of the water supply, electricity, housing, construction, health and education, we can claim with genuine pride that Performance Matters”, stated the Party leader.

During the Premiers address, he asked the members of the Nevis Reformation Party Youth Arm to stand to a thunderous applause from the floor.

“For the first time, the young people have been asked to be represented at the Convention and I am pleased to identify with these young people.  As a Party and Government, we have listened and today I am pleased to see the flower of Nevisian youthful pride before us,” said the Premier.

Mr. Parry stated before the large audience, that he had witnessed the young people come on stage and introduced their Ministers of Government, debated issues and asked questions of the future development of Nevis.

“The young people more than any of us understand that Performance Matters. Performance for them is not about appearances but delivering the services that enhances life in this country,” said the Hon. Joseph Parry.
