VAT Takes Hit On Local Business

VAT DAY, November 1, 2010 will find some 550 businesses, up 150 from last Thursday, registered under the Value Added Tax (VAT).

This has been disclosed by the Tax Reform Unit (VAT Office) of the Inland Revenue Department, which said that all those businesses and individuals are register as they generate gross annual income of EC$150,000.

The names of the businesses registered are listed on www.sknvat.com and includes Audain & Associates, B’s Enterprises, Best Buy, Browne Sugar, B.E.C. Auto Parts, City Drug Store, Builders Paradise, CONTEC, Daniel Brantley & Associates, Dollar Stretcher, Western Apartments, Lindsay F. Grant, Ralph L. Gumbs Electrical Installations, J’s Shop & Save, Kings Pavilion Supermarket, Bryant and Liburd, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), RAMS, S.L. Horsfords, several TDC companies,  ZIZ Broadcasting Company, Powell’s Metal Craft  Limited, Nelson Spring Water, Golden Rock Hotel, Nevis Bakery, Cost U Less and Money World.

According to the Tax Reform Unit, most of these businesses have been issued with Certificates, which must be prominently displayed.

Value Added Tax (VAT) of 17 percent replaces 12 other taxes included the Consumption Tax of 22.5 percent which was reduced to 17 percent since September.

A business’ annual gross TAXABLE income determines the business’ eligibility to register for VAT. Only a VAT registered business is authorized to charge and collect VAT.

Businesses collect VAT on behalf of the State and must be paid into the Inland Revenue Department on time.

Zero-rated items include Adult disposable diapers, Baby disposable diapers, Bread, Flour, Fuel, Infant Formula, Milk, Oats, Rice, Sale of commercial property from one VAT registrant to another and Sugar.

Regarded as exempt imports are goods if the Comptroller is satisfied that VAT has previously been paid on the sale or importation of such goods; Challenge Cups and other trophies presented to participants in an event outside of the Federation; Currency notes and coins imported under the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Agreement; Goods temporarily admitted in the Federation for repair, cleaning or reconditioning, including parts associated with that work; the human remains of a person who has died abroad; unconditional gift of goods without consideration to an approved religious organization and not for sale and unsolicited gifts of food of 45 kilograms.

Exempt supplies include supply of basic construction services on a residential home, a supply of medicines for chronic diseases approved by the Chief Medical Officer, a supply of printed matter, articles and which items include books, newspapers and pamphlets; a supply of the following agricultural inputs: (seedlings, seeds, cuttings, fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, nematicides approved by the Minister of Agriculture; animal feed other than food for domesticated animals generally held as pets; plant propagation bags; poultry, eggs produced locally by the producer; fibre-glass and wooden boats, anchors, G.P.S, compass, V.H.F. Radio. Bus & Taxi Fees, Education services, Electricity, Insurance, Interest on loans, locally produced agricultural produce grown in the Federation, Medical services, Residential Rent and Residential Water.

Monday November 1st is the deadline for former St. Theresa’s Convent High School and St. Joseph’s Primary School principals, teachers, students, parents and guardians to submit photos and memories for inclusion in a magazine to mark the opening of the new Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

According to the Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral, photos that were also taken during the time when both schools were in operation will also be appreciated.

“Photos can be submitted via email to Parish Priest Father Bernard Latus at [email protected] or [email protected] or dropped off personally. Group photos presented will be scanned and returned to the owners. We also will be grateful for written memories or short stories from the history of the two schools,” said the Bulletin.

Congratulatory messages sponsoring the magazine are also welcomed.

The St. Theresa Convent School was first opened in 1896, closed a year later and re-opened in 1912. The St. Joseph Primary School was first opened in 1903. Both schools were merged in September this year and is known as The Immaculate Conception Catholic School. The new school will officially on December 12th 2010.

The full-colour magazine will be launched in February 2011 to celebrate the St. Theresa’s Convent School and the St. Joseph’s School as well as the new Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

Ms Lisa Pistana is Principal of the Secondary School and Mrs, Vernice Rogers, Principal of the Primary School with Dr. Patricia Hensley as Head of the School.

The mission of the school is to create a World Class Institution, with World Class Teachers who provide world class effective instruction using a world class curriculum that greatly exceeds minimum standards in buildings that are well-designed and equipped for students and their needs.

St. Kitts – Nevis Police Investigate Another Murder

On Thursday 28th October 2010 at approximately 7:50 p.m police officers from the Anti-Gang Unit who were on routine patrol, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Special Services Unit (SSU) and officers from Basseterre Beat and Patrol Unit responded to a report of shooting in the Newtown area. Police investigations revealed that Corey Griffin 18 years old of Ponds Extension, who also resides at Shadwell Estate was shot multiple times by his unknown assailant(s) who were travelling north to south along Pitcairn Street in a vehicle. Griffin’s motionless body was discovered by officers at an alley adjoining at Pitcairn Street. Attendants from the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene as well as Dr. Mervin laws the District Medical Officer who pronounced Griffin dead on the scene. The Coroner Mrs. Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe gave permission to remove the body and as a result the body was taken to a funeral home under police escort. Police officers from the Crime Scene Department processed the scene and collected a number of items considered to have evidential value. There are no suspect(s) in custody as yet for this matter but investigations are ongoing. However, the police are making a general appeal to persons who may have information regarding this crime to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 465-2241 Ext-220, 231,236 or 466-8361/2.

On Friday 29th October 2010 at approximately 12:37 a.m police officers from the Anti-Gang Unit who were on routine patrol, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Special Services Unit (SSU) and officers from Basseterre Beat and Patrol Unit responded to a report of robbery in the Camps Estate area. Police investigations revealed that Woman Police Inspector Richardson and daughter Kerlyn Williams travelled to their Camps estate residence in their car, Inspector Richardson drove, and when they got close their gate Inspector Richardson got out of the car to close her neighbor’s gate and was attacked with a wooded plank by an unknown assailant. Inspector Richardson suffered injuries to her head while she and her daughter were robbed of a number of items. Inspector Richardson was taken to the JNF General Hospital where she was treated for her injuries and discharged. The scene was processed by officers from the Crime Scene Department and a number of the stolen items have since been recovered by the detectives. There are no suspect(s) in custody as yet for this matter but investigations are ongoing. However, the police are making a general appeal to persons who may have information regarding this crime to contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 465-2241 Ext-220, 231,236 or 466-8361/2.
